About
“Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one,” A.J. Liebling
Dear Own The Press readers,
Howdy! Thank you for stopping by. Ownthepress.com is the “corporate culture” blog of Massey Media, a progressive communications strategy firm based in DC, serving social justice movements. We put “corporate culture” in quotes as we’re inventing it as we go along. We’re all lefty media activists who try to turn these things on their heads.
Own the press comes from A.J. Leibling’s famous media criticism, “Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one.” As media activists, we live this everyday. We have the inside view of how the press can distort as it reports and the vital role of news and information is to freedom. So, please come along with us on our journey to understand the media and make headlines for social change.
Own The Press writers:
Janaki Spickard-Keeler works as a Media Outreach Specialist at Massey Media, a progressive communications strategy firm in DC. As a writer and researcher, Janaki crafts prose that speaks to journalists and editors and places her clients’ stories in the press. Janaki’s weekly writing on the world of press relations and what the media covers appears on Own The Press.
Sarah Massey is Principal of Massey Media. Since 1995, Sarah has worked to uplift the voices of social change. Her path to communications and media activism began as a student activist for women’s rights and then onto urban policy and planning in New York City. Sarah located her passion in media relations for social change and launched Massey Media in 2004. For Own The Press, Sarah pulls back the media curtain to examine how press gets placed and how information is controlled.
Kelly Flanagan has been advocating for international and intercultural causes for nearly nine years, when she attended her first “immersion trip” to learn about the poverty and racial issues that affected her home town, Kansas City. Since then, she has been to Latin America and the Middle East learning first-hand about international concerns. Kelly is excited to apply her passion for writing to her political efforts through her internship with Massey Media’s Global Justice Media Project (G-JUMP).
