November E-News: Massey Media Celebrates Peace and Justice

November 10, 2010 Be Seen, Make Headlines, Massey Media

Join us this Saturday to Celebrate the Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Act and Applaud an Employer Doing the Right Thing
If you know us at Massey Media, you’ve seen us protesting bad employers and assisting workers in their struggles to realize justice at the workplace. That’s all about to change this Saturday. Instead, we’re going to celebrate a DC employer who is instituting the paid sick days benefit for all workers. How do we celebrate? We’ll be “mobbing” their business and spending our money there to cheer them on to keep up the good work.

The big idea is to use a “carrot” to encourage other business to emulate (vs. the “stick” of a picket). DC’s first carrotmob was developed by the DC Employment Justice Center, where Sarah Massey is a Board Member. The DC Employment Justice Center is one of the lead groups that advocated for the Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Act, one of two laws in the nation that makes it mandatory for employers to offer paid sick days. But, there was a loophole for restaurants. The carrotmob sponsors, including Massey Media, set out to find DC restaurants that embraced the important workplace standard of paid sick days and celebrate them for it. If you’re in DC, please join us this Saturday, starting at 10 AM at the (yummy!) Teaism in Penn Quarter. Learn more here: http://dc.carrotmob.org
